About OPW

Seeking the Perfect Work-Travel Balance

Welcome to OPW! This is of course my personal blog, a place to share some of my experiences as my wife, Allison, and dog, Koda, travel around the world. For the last several years I’ve been doing exactly what most of us do, working most of the time and mixing in a few vacations here and there. Well starting this year we’re reversing that trend and will be working a little as we travel! We started our adventure in South America where we were working on expanding our business, My A La Mode, launching another venture (details coming soon!) and exploring all this great continent had to offer. Since then we’ve moved on to Europe and are based in Spain for now. Our goal is to see as much as we can of this world, please join us for the ride!

I also feature other wanderers who are living similar lives, working while traveling and enjoying location independence. These Featured Wanderers are accomplishing this through entrepreneurship, voluntourism, self-employment, or simply jobs that allow them the flexibility to work from wherever they want. Their stories inspired me, hopefully they will do the same for you!

Before embarking on this journey I had to answer some questions. Do I want to drop everything I’ve worked for just to travel? How bad do I want the ability to work from Tuscany one year and Bali the next; and what am I willing to do to make that happen? How about the dream of owning my own business, being my own boss, and working from my laptop wherever and whenever I want? Am I ready for these changes? Does this sound familiar to you?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, then let me ask you this, what’s stopping you? After all, we do live in a time where technology has almost completely eliminated communication and information barriers. For many of us it’s the security of our current position or the current lifestyle we’re scared to give up. Perhaps it’s the fear of letting someone else down, or not following the path that society has laid for you. Whatever your case may be, I guarantee you you’re not alone, and even more so I promise there is a solution to your problem. Sharing those answers and inspiring others to follow their dreams is precisely the reason I started On Purpose Wanderer.
